Week 3 Hansen UniMineR Informative Post

Hansen UniMiNeR Gearbox Crossover Opportunities

Informative Post

The Hansen UniMineR is a right angle gearbox that was designed and engineered in 1997 by Rexnord as a direct, drop in replacement for many of their models being discontinued.  The attached link represents the informative information SMA advertises on the topic to coal mine customers throughout the United States.  The joint venture between Rexnord and Hansen lasted until 2003 when the organizations parted ways.  The article informs the reader that when Sumitomo Machinery Corporation of America acquired Hansen mid-year in 2013, they immediately gained the advantage of having a product that could complete directly with their biggest competitors in the replacement gearbox segment.  That competitors being Falk and Linkbelt, which the author mentions throughout his writing.  The editorial explains the accurate depiction of how the UniMineR's frame, base to center and center distance are a direct replica of competitive Rexnord model numbers Link Belt KLC280, Link Belt LC250, Link Belt LC315, Falk 405, Falk 425 and 2090Y.  Beside just the size similarities the article presents the relevant fact that the UniMineR also has many features, advantages and benefits for end users in the mining industry.

The Hansen UniMineR was designed with the ability to correctly lubricate either right side up or upside down, making it a flappable gearbox.  The author focuses on expressing the point to end users that they only have to stock one unit for multiple mounting configurations creating documented added value cost savings.  A +/- 3 degree tilt also makes the unit an alignment free design, allowing the installer more flexibility with no modification requirements to the split housing line.  The cast iron housing has reinforced ribbing for additional support and is also available in strong, ductile iron housing.  The units are assembled with grease purged seals, resulting in less maintenance up keep for the customer.  Output options include standard low speed output shaft, keyed hollow bore and finally shrink disc.  An inspection cover on both the top and bottom of the housing allows the end user to easily and conveniently inspect gearing, lubrication color and the input pinion quickly and efficiently. The inspection cover also allows one to view all the other internal workings of the gearbox without it having to be moved or disassembled.

The writer expresses that the Hansen UniMineR is an engineered supported product available in a multitude of mounting configurations with custom solutions specific to the end user’s needs.  These custom solutions would include: motor mounting options, special ratios and special shaft diameters and color options.  The article does a good job of focusing on the many, many years of experience SMA engineers have built up in regards to knowledge and experience in the gearbox category to assist in creating the ideal product for an exact application.
